Taroko Gorge

Taroko Gorge is the canyon of the Liwu River in Xiulin Township, Hualien, where the river has cut through marble over millions of years. The gorge is the centre of Taroko National Park, which covers 92,000 hectares across Hualien, Nantou and Taichung and contains twenty-seven peaks above 3,000 metres. The name comes from the Truku people, who live in the area. A road runs through the gorge, and trails lead to waterfalls, temples and hot springs. Access has been limited since the April 2024 earthquake.

The gorge cut through marble

The Liwu River has cut a canyon through marble in eastern Taiwan. Taroko is both a national park and a Truku homeland, with roads shaped by the challenges of the terrain.
