Paper, after the earthquake
The 1999 earthquake flattened much of Puli. Taomi Village rebuilt around a paper church, and the town's paper mills turned toward visitors.
Puli sits in a bowl-shaped basin in northern Nantou, surrounded by the Central Mountain Range. It is a market town for the surrounding farms and, since the 1990s, a centre for paper making and community tourism. The 1999 earthquake damaged the town badly, especially Taomi Village, which rebuilt around a paper church donated from Kobe. The island's geographic centre is marked on a hill nearby.
