Basalt, wind and the sea goddess
Penghu is a volcanic archipelago of ninety islands, with columnar basalt, a temple older than most of Taiwan's, and a wind that never stops.
Magong is the largest town in Penghu and the county seat, on the main island. Its name comes from the Mazu temple at its centre, the Penghu Tianhou Temple, which is usually considered the oldest Mazu temple in Taiwan. The town grew around the temple and the harbour, and its old streets, the Central Street commercial row and the Four-Eyed Well are still there. Magong is the ferry and air hub for the archipelago, with boats to Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chiayi and the smaller islands.
