The lake with a sacred island
Sun Moon Lake is the largest water body in Taiwan and the centre of Thao territory. Power, tourism and ritual share the shore.
Sun Moon Lake lies in Yuchi Township at 748 metres above sea level, with a surface area of about 7.9 square kilometres and a depth of 27 metres. The Thao people call it Zintun and consider Lalu, the small island in the middle, sacred. A dam built in 1919 raised the water for hydroelectric power, and the lake became one of the island's first scenic areas. Ferries link three piers, a road and a bike path circle the shore, and temples sit on the ridges above.
