The lane above the buried canals
Shennong Street was a trading lane on the Five Channels. The water is gone, but the wooden shophouses and the dockworkers' temple remain.
Shennong Street runs through the West Central District of Tainan, in the area once crossed by the Five Channels. Its eastern half was Beishi Street, named for its position north of the Nanshi Port. The two-storey wooden houses were built for trade: a shop at street level, a warehouse above. The Jinhuafu temple on the street was the centre of worship for dockworkers. The name Shennong comes from the Yaowang Temple at the western end.
