Huludao.

In the Huludao region, defence did more than trace a line across the hills. Xingcheng’s old Ningyuan city organised streets, gates, learning and public honours inside a fortified square. Farther west in Suizhong County, Jiumenkou had to carry a wall across running water. Both places have been repaired and reused, their military fabric sustained by generations of building work and surrounded by the lives of residents.
