A Capital Built with the Mountain
Wunushan’s cliffs were part of its architecture. Archaeology shows how a Koguryo city fitted defenses and buildings to a difficult site.
Wunushan is in Huanren Manchu Autonomous County, under Benxi. It forms the Liaoning component of the UNESCO property Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom, inscribed in 2004. The other cities and tombs in that property are in neighbouring Jilin. Archaeology at Wunushan has identified defensive and domestic remains from more than one period, making the mountain a layered settlement rather than a single moment preserved intact.
