A View and a Monument: Baiyushan Above Lüshun Harbour
The hill makes the port’s geography visible while its tower asks a harder question about what a monument was built to remember.
Baiyushan links a view of the enclosed harbour with the history of the tower on its summit. Built in 1907–1909 after the Russo-Japanese War, the tower originally expressed Japanese imperial commemoration. Its survival under a different name makes the hill a place to consider both the strategic landscape below and the changing public meaning of a monument.
