The Food beneath the Flock
At the Yalu estuary, a shorebird’s long journey depends on small animals in the mud and a feeding ground that remains productive.
The Yalu estuary wetland lies in Donggang, under Dandong, where freshwater and the Yellow Sea meet. Exposed flats and high-tide resting areas serve different needs for migrating shorebirds. Dayang River and Erdaogou are mapped components of the coastal bird-sanctuary World Heritage property, whose 2024 extension included this region. That designation has specific boundaries; it does not cover every piece of the wider coast.
