Fengguo Temple: How a Timber Hall Keeps Its Shape
From a reconstructed carpenter’s ruler to newly fired roof tiles, Fengguo’s great hall makes architecture a continuing act of care.
Founded in 1020, Fengguo Temple contains an eleventh-century Daxiong Hall with a broad hipped roof, painted beams and a monumental sculpture ensemble. Later buildings and decoration add further layers to the precinct. The hall reopened after repairs on 1 October 2026; future access remains subject to the temple’s conservation arrangements.
