North Pagoda: A City Folded into a Tower
Successive builders wrapped earlier structures, while a hidden chamber preserved a carefully assembled Buddhist deposit.
North Pagoda’s current silhouette conceals earlier foundations and a Sui–Tang brick core beneath Liao-period work. Its sculpted exterior speaks in Buddhist images, while the relic chambers discovered during twentieth-century repairs reveal another, once-hidden devotional world. The nearby museum provides the setting for interpreting these objects and the tower’s archaeology.
