Hetu Ala before the Qing
Hetu Ala was Nurhaci’s Later Jin capital in 1616. Its well, household spaces and banner offices connect state formation with everyday needs, while modern reconstructions give that past a visible setting.
Hetu Ala is in Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun. Here Nurhaci established the Later Jin state in 1616; his son Hong Taiji adopted the Qing dynastic name in 1636, after the political centre had moved to Shenyang. The present historic-city attraction includes reconstructed buildings and displays alongside the historic site. The Khan’s Well, the Khan’s Court and spaces interpreted through banner organisation help explain the combination of household, military and political life associated with this early centre.
