How a Museum Was Made: Lüshun’s Building and Far-Travelled Collections
An Ionic portico, Central Asian objects and repaired Buddhist manuscripts open three different histories of the same institution.
Lüshun Museum’s Ionic portico belongs to a building opened in 1918, a year after the institution’s official opening. The collection extends well beyond the surrounding port: Central Asian objects and Buddhist manuscripts carry histories of excavation, removal, acquisition and later scholarship. The building and the collection therefore raise complementary questions about how a museum is made and how knowledge about its objects changes.
