The Coast Is Still Being Made: Reading Jinshitan’s Rock Forms
The named silhouettes are an introduction to a more revealing story about bedding, weak points and the work of waves.
Jinshitan’s geological coast forms the core of Dalian Coastal National Geopark. The cliffs and rock surfaces bring together Neoproterozoic and Cambrian strata, microbial structures, ancient sedimentary marks and younger marine erosion. Animal-shaped landmark names offer one way to notice the coast; bedding, cracks and changing rock textures offer another. Its national designation should not be confused with UNESCO Global Geopark status.
