Temples between Mountain and Sea
Dagushan’s temple names and different building dates reveal a religious landscape that has continued to develop.
Dagushan’s historic complex is in Donggang, within Dandong. Its surviving older buildings are principally from the middle and later Qing period, despite traditions that carry the site’s beginnings much further back. Shengshui Palace, Tianhou Palace and the newer Xuandu Palace belong to different layers of this landscape. The presence of Tianhou, the sea goddess also known as Mazu, gives the mountain a connection with the coastal world below.
