A Whale at the Edge of the Sea: Dalian’s Natural-History Collections
The museum’s great whale is a starting point for reading anatomy, specimen preparation and the distance between a collected animal and a living population.
At Heishijiao, Dalian Natural History Museum gives the coastal setting an indoor counterpart. Marine mammals are especially prominent in accounts of its collection, including a large North Pacific right-whale mount, but its scope also includes plants, geology and fossils from elsewhere in Liaoning. The collection connects the anatomy of large marine mammals with the fossils and habitats of northeastern China.
