The Wall at the River
Hushan joins ridge, cliff and river in a defensive landscape whose visible masonry has a substantial modern history.
Hushan stands beside the Yalu in Hushan town, Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County, within Dandong. Chinese national survey accounts identify it as the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall, the defensive network associated with the dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644. The prominent standing wall owes much to reconstruction beginning in the 1990s. The historic site and the modern presentation need to be understood together, with the river and cliffs part of the defensive landscape.
