The Work behind the Peach Blossom

Hekou’s river scenery is also productive land, linking the beauty of spring flowers to the practical business of an autumn crop.

The same trees, a different season

Hekou sits beside the Yalu in Changdian town, Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County. Its peach orchards give the village two distinct seasonal identities. In spring the blossom becomes a landscape; in autumn the Yanhong peach becomes a crop to gather and sell. The flowers and ripe fruit belong to different moments in the work of the same trees.

A 2026 report published by the National Ethnic Affairs Commission follows that connection through local growers. It places the celebrated view within a working village, where attention to visitors is one activity among several rather than the whole purpose of the orchard.

What a cold store changes

The report describes grower Ji Hongzhou using cold storage as part of his peach business. Storage changes the relationship between ripening and sale: fruit does not all have to move to a buyer at the moment it is picked. Orchard production continues into handling, keeping and distribution.

That is a less visible form of seasonality than blossom. The grower’s work continues long after the spring flowers have fallen. Cold storage belongs to the same peach economy as a visitor’s view, but serves a different problem.

An orchard reaches beyond the village

CCTV’s August 2026 report describes Wang Zhongwu’s household combining a peach orchard with a small lodging business. Online orders connected the coming harvest to customers, while the G331 road connected the village with passing visitors. These are specific ways a family’s work can extend beyond the trees themselves.

Hekou also belongs to a protected historic-village planning framework approved by Liaoning in 2024. That status adds a long-term concern to the seasonal one: how new buildings and business uses relate to the village’s inherited setting.

The village is thus held together by several calendars. Trees flower and fruit. Families plan sales and receive guests. Conservation planning considers changes that last beyond a season. The Yalu remains the setting for all three, while the orchard makes the relationship between landscape and livelihood particularly visible.
