The County That Kept Changing Province
Ji County became Jizhou District only in 2016, after six decades of being merged, transferred and split again.
The town at the centre of Jizhou District has changed its administrative name more often than most places in north China. In February 1913, when the new republic abolished the prefecture, Jizhou became Ji County (蓟县). In 1928, when Zhili Province was renamed, the county passed to Hebei. Through the 1930s and 1940s it was administered in turn by a Japanese-backed autonomous government, by the Ji Eastern Dao and by the Yenching Dao. In 1973 it was placed under Tianjin, and it stayed a county until June 2016, when the State Council approved Jizhou District on exactly the same territory.
