A Harbour Dug Out of the Coast
China's largest artificial deep-water port, four port areas, and the August 2015 explosion that killed 173 people.
The Port of Tianjin, also called the New Port, is the largest artificial deep-water harbour in China and one of the most important comprehensive ports in the north. Its water and land area totals nearly 260 square kilometres, divided into the Beijiang, Nanjiang, Dongjiang and Haihe port areas, and it handles routes to more than five hundred ports in over 180 countries, which makes it the main sea outlet for landlocked countries such as Mongolia. Its throughput capacity is the fifth largest in the world, while on a different measure the sources call it the world's fourth largest comprehensive trading port. In August 2015 a fire and explosion at a hazardous chemical warehouse inside the port killed 173 people.
