The German Quarter
A concession of 1895 enlarged in 1901, taken over in 1917, and largely lost in the 1976 earthquake.
Hexi covers 41.24 square kilometres in the south of the city proper and takes its name from its position on the west bank of the Hai River. The municipal government, the Tianjin business district, the Friendship Road financial street, the Cultural Centre and the Meijiang area all lie within it, which makes it the administrative as well as the commercial centre of the modern city. It has fourteen subdistricts, 144 residents' committees and 736 natural neighbourhoods, and at the 2020 census it counted 822,174 residents, 28 per cent of them over sixty. The district was the sixth district until 1956, was called the Red Flag district from 1966 to 1968, and took the municipal government's own seat in 2010.
