Hongqiao covers 21.3 square kilometres in the north-west of central Tianjin, on the north bank of the Ziya River, and takes its name from the Dahong Bridge, the big red bridge, that crosses it. The sources describe the embryo of old Tianjin as lying inside the district, which is a strong claim for a place most visitors pass through on the way to somewhere else. It holds four national key protected sites, among them the Peiyang University site, the Tianjin West Station main building and the Qianxiangyi silk shop, and Hebei University of Technology is seated here. At the 2020 census it counted 483,130 residents across nine subdistricts.
