Two Seats on One Canal
A county that moved its town in the Ming, and a wharf village that ended up governing the district.
Wuqing is an old county with two seats. The county town inherited the seat of Yongnu County and was first at Jiuxian village in Sicun town, moving to the present Chengguan town in the early Ming. The town that matters now is Yangcun, in the south-east of the district, built along the North Canal, an ancient grain wharf, and the seat of the district government. The district is crossed by the North Canal and the Yongding River and has been on the necessary route of canal transport since ancient times, which is why the sources call it the pearl between Beijing and Tianjin and why it now has a station on the Beijing-Tianjin intercity railway.
