Shawo radish

The Shawo radish (沙窝萝卜), also called the Tianjin green radish, is grown around Xiaoshawo village in Xinkou town of Xiqing District and takes its name from the place. Its root is cylindrical with a green skin and a translucent flesh, sweet, hot, crisp and juicy enough to have earned the saying that the Shawo radish rivals a pear. The soil is what makes it possible: flood-deposited ground with sand above and clay below, watered from the canal, has carried the crop for more than three hundred years. It has been approved as a national geographical indication product, its growing and storage skills are on the Tianjin intangible heritage list, and in 2024 it became the second Tianjin farm brand to enter the national programme.
