A County Made Out of Salt
The salt office that came before the county, a name that means a treasure of the state, and 15,000 households moved to make it.
Baodi lies in the north of Tianjin, at what the sources call the geographic centre of the Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan triangle, with the Chaobai Xin River running through the whole district. It was known as Quyang and Yingzhou, and it became a county only in the twelfth year of Dading under the Jin, in 1172, when 15,000 households were taken from Xianghe County and given a seat at Xincang town. The name is a sentence about salt: the county was called Baodi because salt is a treasure of the state, and the phrase takes the sense of storing it as one stores the classics of the capital. At the 2020 census Baodi had 722,367 residents.
