A County Made Out of Salt

Baodi's history is a salt history that became a county. In the third year of Tianfu, 938, the Later Jin ceded the Sixteen Prefectures to the Liao, who set up Xincang town here, giving rise to the local saying that the salt office came before the county. In the twelfth year of Dading, 1172, the Jin took 15,000 households from Xianghe County and established Baodi County with its seat at Xincang, building an earthen wall and naming the place for salt as a treasure of the state. In 1173 the salt inspection and salt transport offices were merged into the Baodi Salt Office, one of the seven salt offices of the Jin, supplying the Central Capital circuit.
