The Port That Was There First
Tanggu opened its new port in 1952 and lost its own name in 2009, when it was merged into Binhai.
Tanggu is older than the new area that absorbed it. It grew as a fishing and shipping settlement at the point where the Hai River reaches the sea, and in the first half of the twentieth century Tanggu, Hangu and Dagu formed the port and industrial base of the lower river. In October 1952 Tanggu New Port opened and the first 10,000-tonne vessel arrived at Newport Pier. The Tianjin Tanggu Marine High-Tech Development Area was established in 1992 and raised to national level in 1995. In November 2009 Tanggu, Hangu and Dagang were merged into the new Binhai New Area, and Tanggu became a group of subdistricts inside it.
