Jizhou lies in the far north of Tianjin. It is the only part of the municipality with mountain terrain; Panshan, Limutai, Jiushanding, Baxianshan and Huangyaguan all stand inside it. Before 2016 it was Ji County, which had passed in turn through Hebei's Tongzhou prefecture, the Tangshan prefecture and, since 1973, Tianjin. The district holds China's only national geopark recording Middle-Upper Proterozoic earth history, and the International Union of Geological Sciences has confirmed the reserve there as a world standard stratigraphic section. Tianjin has two World Cultural Heritage properties, and the Huangyaguan Great Wall, north of the district town, is one of them.
