Drill Ground and Rice Field
A town that trained the Beiyang army and gave its name to one of Tianjin's best-known rices.
Jinnan was called Nanjiao, the South Suburb, until 1992, when Tianjin's four ring districts were renamed Dongli, Jinnan, Xiqing and Beichen. It lies on the west bank of the lower Hai River and faces Dongli across the water; its name means south of Tianjin, which describes where it sits relative to the old urban core. At the 2020 census it had 928,066 residents. The district's modern identity owes much to the Haihe Education Park, also called Beiyang Yuan, laid out between the city centre and the Binhai New Area, which holds the new campuses of Nankai University and Tianjin University and is planned for a student body of 200,000.
