Chaobai River

The Chaobai River (潮白河) is 458 kilometres long and runs from the junction of the Chao and Bai rivers below Miyun in Beijing, through Hebei Province, into the Hai system in Tianjin. Its average depth is 2.5 metres. The two headwaters leave the reservoir in their old channels and join below Miyun town, where the river takes the name Chaobai; in 1555, in the thirty-fourth year of Jiajing, they were joined artificially at Hechao village so that the river could be used for canal transport. In Tianjin the river now runs in a separate channel: the sources record that the Chaobai has been diverted to the Chaobai Xin River and no longer joins the Northern Canal.
