The station's importance is structural rather than architectural. When the Jingpu railway and Tianjin West station opened in 1911, the old Tianjin station on the north bank was renamed the East station, and the city acquired the pattern of three stations, north, east and west, that it still uses to describe its rail network. Tianjin West, Tianjin station and Binhai West station are now the three main stations of the hub. A station that created a naming system for the whole city has a claim on the record beyond its own traffic, and the sources treat the 1911 opening as the moment the pattern was set.

The Main Building
What survives of the original station is its main building, which is one of the four national key protected cultural relic units of Hongqiao District, a list it shares with the Peiyang University site and the Qianxiangyi silk shop. Its inclusion on that list is the strongest statement the sources make about it, and it is a statement about the building rather than the service: a station that has been rebuilt around its old head house, in the way most large stations are, but whose earliest structure was judged worth keeping. The sources do not record its architect or its construction details.
The Airport in the Station
The station's most recent change is a small piece of institutional history. In June 2025 a city terminal for Beijing Daxing International Airport opened at Tianjin West station on the Jinxing intercity railway, which means passengers can check in for a flight in another municipality at a railway station in this one. The central city plan had already made the West Station area one of two secondary centres, with Xiaobailou as the main centre and the Tiangang Liulin area as the other secondary one. A terminus built to serve a railway in 1911 now functions as a gateway to an airport in a different city.
