Guqin Terrace stands on the south side of Yuehu Lake, west of Turtle Hill in Hanyang. Halls, courtyards and a white-stone platform form a setting devoted to a musical friendship. Rebuilding over the centuries has kept the story visible through changing architecture. The small scale of the compound and the water beside it give the place an intimate character within the larger river city.

The Friend Who Understood the Music
At Hanyang’s Guqin Terrace, the story of Boya and Zhong Ziqi gives a small lakeside place a lasting word for friendship: zhiyin.

Someone who could hear
In the familiar story, the musician Boya plays and Zhong Ziqi understands the mountains and flowing water expressed in his music. After Ziqi dies, Boya breaks his instrument and gives up playing. The tale of a listener who hears a musician’s intentions became a powerful image of friendship. Its presence here is a local tradition of remembrance, not evidence that the present marble terrace was the original meeting place.
A word that outlives the sound
Zhiyin literally suggests someone who understands the sound; in everyday Chinese it can mean a person who understands you deeply. The story explains why the place matters even to a reader unfamiliar with the guqin. A musical encounter becomes a vocabulary for affection and recognition, carried by the name of the terrace and by the city’s continuing attachment to the tale.
