The Red Building and the Days of 1911
Wuchang’s Red Building changed from a provincial assembly to the seat of the 1911 military government and later a memorial museum.
At 1 Wuluo Road in Wuchang, at the north end of Yuema Field, stands the former site of the Wuchang Uprising Military Government, known as the Red Building for the colour of its main block. It was begun in 1909 and finished the following year, as a two-storey brick-and-timber building in the western parliamentary style, and it had been the office of the Hubei Provincial Consultative Council before the revolution. On 10 October 1911 the New Army stationed in Wuchang mutinied and assaulted the residence of the Viceroy of Huguang, and on 11 October the mutineers set up a military government for the province in this building. It is now a national first-class museum and a 4A scenic area, opened for the seventieth anniversary of the uprising in 1981 and rated among the third batch of national first-class museums in 2017.
