A County That Keeps a Poet
Zigui's claim on Qu Yuan, the county seat that had to move when the reservoir rose, and the town that carries the poet's name.
Zigui County lies in western Hubei under the administration of Yichang and covers the easternmost part of the Yangtze River Gorges, including Xiling Gorge. Its old county town upstream was abandoned and drowned by the reservoir in the early years of the 21st century; the seat moved to Maoping, a few kilometres west of the dam on the high southern shore. The county calls itself the home of Qu Yuan, and one of its eight towns carries his name. Tea and citrus grow on the slopes, and coal comes down from the hills to barges on the river.
