The Earlier Dam at the Gorge Exit
Gezhouba, below Xiling Gorge at Yichang, introduced a large dam and ship locks to the Yangtze before the Three Gorges project upstream.
Gezhouba stands below Nanjin Pass and downstream of the separate Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping. Construction began in 1970 and proceeded in stages. Generating units and ship locks connect its engineering history to navigation and changes in the river environment.
