The gorge announces itself as a piece of engineering now, because the road crosses it in the air. The Dehang Grand Canyon lies at Jishou, the capital of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, a cleft in the Wuling mountain country of the far west of Hunan — a prefecture of deep valleys between high ridges, its rivers cutting gorges through limestone and shale. The Aizhai suspension bridge takes the G65 expressway directly over the canyon at Aizhai town, which administers this ground, and the scenic area that carries the gorge's name was assembled from exactly these pieces: the bridge above, the Dehang canyon below, and the village of Shibadong over the ridge in Huayuan county, bundled together as one graded attraction. The road is the newest layer of an old crossing problem; the canyon floor and the stream it carries are the oldest; and a visit now runs between them, down from the deck of the bridge to the water the span pretends to step over. Jishou's own geography explains the drama. The city sits at the southwestern margin of the Wuling range's main body, its land mostly low mountain and hill cut through with caves and rivers, and the Dehang gorge is where that land folds deepest.

The canyon and the villages in it
The Dehang gorge at Jishou runs under the Aizhai suspension bridge and beside Miao and Tujia villages, bundled into a 5A scenic area with Shibadong. The visit now runs from the engineering of the deck down to the water.

The villages on the water
The villages of the gorge belong to the peoples the prefecture is named for. Jishou city — the prefectural capital around which the gorge lies — counts its population in almost equal thirds of Tujia, Miao and Han, and language still marks the difference daily: most of the local Miao speak the Xiangxi dialect of Miao alongside the southwest Mandarin that everyone shares, while the Tujia households have shifted wholly to Mandarin, their own tongue holding strongest in the northern counties. The Miao of this western arm of Hunan are the Xong — the Red Miao of the old colour names — one of the four principal branches of the Miao across southern China, and the communities of the gorge country are theirs and the Tujia's together. Shibadong village, the settlement folded into the scenic area, is a Miao mountain village of Huayuan county that now carries an international reputation. Village life here is river-and-slope agriculture with tourism folded in at the edges: the households of the gorge farm the valley ground and the benches above it, and in the same decade they have learned to look up at visitors crossing their sky, a situation no previous generation ever had to picture.
The valley as a scenic route
The gorge became a numbered attraction in 2021. On the eleventh of June that year the Aizhai, Shibadong and Dehang Grand Canyon scenic area was rated 5A, the top national grade, putting the gorge into the small company of Chinese sites — the old town of Fenghuang among them — that hold it. The visitor route the grade assumes runs from the bridge down: the deck viewpoint above the canyon, the road to the floor, the villages and the water. In November 2024 Shibadong village entered the United Nations tourism body's list of Best Tourism Villages for the year, an international seal on a settlement that a generation earlier was reached by paths. The work the rating created is local by design, and the transport finished the geometry the same year: the high-speed line from Zhangjiajie through Jishou to Huaihua opened in December 2021, and its stations in the prefecture put the gorge within an hour of the stone pillars. The G65 expressway passes the bridge and Shibadong on its way from Chongqing toward Huaihua, a stretch official writing calls a prosperity corridor through the Wuling mountains. A valley that took a day to cross now appears on itineraries between breakfast and lunch, and the villages decide what that speed will mean for them.
