Dongjiang Lake

Dongjiang Lake (东江湖) is a reservoir in Zixing City, on the upper Lei River in the southeast of Chenzhou, about 38 kilometres from the city centre. Built in stages between 1958 and 1992, the dam backs up a lake of about 160 square kilometres with a total storage of 9.15 billion cubic metres, and it drives a 500-megawatt hydroelectric station. The lake is known as the South Dongting, the largest artificial lake in central-southern China, and it also serves as a training base for water sports. Its water stays cold, around 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, and when the dam gates open the green water shatters into a curtain of fog that hangs in the gorge. The whole scenic area is a national 5A tourist attraction.
