Gaoyiling Terraces

Gaoyiling (高椅岭) is a Danxia landform area set on the line between Suxian District and Zixing City in Chenzhou, where the red sandstone of the Nanling foothills has been carved into ridges and bluffs. The scenic area covers 50.5 square kilometres and is rated a national AAAA tourist attraction. Its name means high chair ridge, after the shape of the rock. Around it lie the region's other famous landscapes, Dongjiang Lake, Feitian Mountain and the old village of Banliang, so the terraces belong to a cluster of sights rather than standing alone. It is a landscape of bare red earth and layered rock, a place shaped as much by erosion as by anything human hands have done.
