Shennong City

At Luyuanpo in Yanling County, in the mountains at Zhuzhou's southern edge, stands the tomb of the Yan Emperor (炎帝), the Flame Emperor of legend, identified with Shennong, the teacher of farming and herbal medicine. No written record survives from his supposed age, but the claim organised a landscape: the county was renamed Yanling, 'Yan's tomb', in 1994, and the shrine ranks among Zhuzhou's chief heritage sites. Pilgrims come as to a family grave, since Han Chinese call themselves descendants of Yan and Huang.

The Flame Emperor's tomb at Zhuzhou

Zhuzhou, Hunan's rail city, keeps the tomb of the Yan Emperor in its southern mountains. The shrine, the county that took its name from it and the herbal legend behind it are the three threads the tomb has tied together.
