Dongshan Academy

Dongshan Academy (东山书院) in Xiangxiang City is the surviving academy of a county long known for its schools. The site is listed among China's national key cultural relic protection units, in the same Xiangtan batch as Mao Zedong's farmhouse at Shaoshan. Xiangxiang's school line continues in the modern Dongshan School, counted among Hunan's provincial demonstration middle schools. The county's academies are also tied to Zeng Guofan, the Qing statesman born there, to whom a research museum in the city is dedicated.
