A city built around a lake
Changde kept an open lake at its northeast edge and organised its newest identity around the shore. The lake, the plan that protected it, and the waterfront life it now anchors make up this story.
Liuye Lake (柳叶湖), Willow-Leaf Lake, is a freshwater lake of about 17.6 square kilometres in the Yangtze basin, lying to the northeast of Changde's city centre. While many of the city's smaller lakes and streams have been diverted or buried by growth, Liuye has been kept and wrapped in a designated tourism resort zone, one of the municipality's special management areas. It holds a national tourism rating, facilities built for events up to international championship level including the eighth Asian Rowing Championship, and the everyday role of the city's principal recreation ground.
