Nanshan Pasture

Nanshan Pasture (南山牧场) is the high grassland of Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, in the far southwest of Shaoyang, where the Snow Peak and Nanling ranges come together. The county's grassland covers 91,000 hectares, and about 63,000 hectares of it is a single stretch of pasture able to carry some 87,000 head of livestock. On this ground the region keeps the cattle that feed its dairy, a pillar industry that turns out thousands of tons of milk powder and liquid milk a year. The pasture now lies within Hunan Nanshan National Park, one of the country's first ten national parks. It is a working grassland whose milk and meat feed the province as much as its views draw visitors.
