Shanggantang Village

Shanggantang (上甘棠村) is a lineage village in Jiangyong County, Yongzhou, built and inhabited for centuries by a single Zhou-surnamed clan. At its entrance stands the Buyin Bridge, a three-arch stone bridge begun in 1126 and thirty metres long, which carried the old post road across the water. Beside the bridge rises the Wenchang Pavilion, a four-storey hall first raised in 1620, and behind them the village keeps 176 houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties, altogether about 20,000 square metres of old building. In 2007 the village was listed as a Chinese historic and cultural village. It is a place where the family, the road and the water still read clearly in the street plan.
