Sanchahekou

Sanchahekou (三岔河口), anciently called Sanhuikou, is where the Ziya River, the South Canal and the Hai River meet, and it is the point at which the Hai River begins. The north bank belongs to Hebei District and the south bank to Hongqiao. The sources call it the earliest birthplace of Tianjin, and the reason is the Sui Grand Canal: once the southern and northern canals were joined, this junction became the place where goods changed from one waterway to another. In 1214 the Jin built the Zhigu stockade here, and in 1316 the Yuan renamed it Haijin Town. A monument to the Luan River diversion was erected here in 1986.
