Minyuan Stadium (民园广场) was begun in 1920 by the Tianjin British concession municipal council at 83 Chongqing Road in Heping District. Its 1926 rebuilding left a site of about 33,000 square metres with about 20,000 square metres of floor space and nearly 20,000 seats, and it reopened on 6 October 1926, hosting the international athletics games in 1929. Eric Liddell helped build it while a missionary in Tianjin in 1926, modelling it on Stamford Bridge in London. After the 1976 Tangshan earthquake the ground was closed and used to house victims, a major repair ran from 1979 to 1982, and the remodelled Minyuan Square opened on 1 May 2014.
