Jiugong Mountain lies in Tongshan County, Xianning, in the Mufu mountain range. Its name, “Nine Palaces”, is explained by a tradition about princes sheltering here and building palaces. That is a story carried by the place, not a count of nine surviving buildings that every visitor can expect to find.

Jiugong Mountain in Tongshan brings a highland lake, wooded slopes and the memory of Daoist practice into one southern Hubei landscape.

A name from a story
Water and trees above the plain
Yunzhong Lake gives the mountain a recognisable centre. Around it, wooded slopes, exposed rock and paths offer views that change with cloud and season. Water held high among the ridges feels different from the broad, low waters of the Jianghan Plain. Pine branches and the line of a distant slope frame the lake, making the mountain’s name something that can be approached through a particular view.
A mountain of religious memory
Daoist establishments and the traditions associated with Zhang Daoqing form another layer of Jiugong’s history. The mountain also carries stories connected with Li Zicheng and a commemorative tomb near its foot. These are different periods and kinds of memory. They belong to the mountain’s cultural landscape, alongside the forest and lake, rather than proving one continuous tale from ancient princes to the present.
