The Granary North of the City
A town named for its storehouses, a Warring States site by the canal, and a district seat that moved.
Beicang (北仓) means the northern granary, and the name is a record of what the place did. Since the Yuan court fixed its capital at Beijing, Beicang served as a distribution centre for imperial grain moving along the canal, and the settlement took its name from the storehouses. It lay in the south of what was then Wuqing, was later transferred to Tianjin County, and is now the seat of the Beichen district government. Its ground is old enough that one of the only two excavated sites in Beichen is a residential site of the Yan state of the Warring States, found beside the North Canal at Beicang town.
