A Ruler's House Beside the River at Dingxiang

A family compound at Hebian in Dingxiang County, built by Yan Xishan in the 1920s and read through two listing dates: provincial protection in 1986, national in 2013.

The village on the river

The compound stands at Hebian, the riverside village of Dingxiang County, and the name of the place is the first fact about the house. Dingxiang is one of the twelve counties of Xinzhou prefecture in north-central Shanxi, on the middle ground between the Lüliang ridges to the west and the Hengshan and Wutai ranges to the east. The Hutu River rises on Mount Wutai and leaves the prefecture in the south-east; the flat land it waters here is the Xinding basin. So the setting is farmland rather than a temple town or a prefectural capital: a village seat on a county's flat ground, near the river the village is named for.

The 1920s and the two listings

The second fact is the date. The record says the compound was built by Yan Xishan in the 1920s, which makes it a twentieth-century house rather than one of the Ming and Qing mansions that supply most of Shanxi's protected buildings. What happened to it afterwards is told in two listing dates. In 1986 the province listed it as a cultural protection unit, the rank Shanxi gives to buildings of regional value. In 2013 it entered the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units, the highest register the country keeps. Between those two dates, twenty-seven years apart, the house changed category: from a family's own seat to a building the state undertakes to protect.

What the listing fixes

A national listing fixes a few plain things, and these are the things the house can be read through. It fixes the name: the record carries both Yan Xishan former residence and Yan family compound, the man and the family together, and both now attach to one address at Hebian in Dingxiang County. It fixes the decade of building, the 1920s, and it fixes the two steps by which the place entered the protection system, in 1986 and again in 2013. Beyond that the record is silent, and the silence is worth respecting: what survives is a dated family seat in a farming village of the Xinding basin, held now as a national building rather than a private house.
