Pusading, the Yellow Temple on the Hill
A Gelug monastery on the ridge above Taihuai: a Northern Wei foundation turned lama temple in 1656, yellow glazed tiles from 1683, 108 steps up, and two emperors' inscriptions still in place.
Pusading, whose name means Bodhisattva Summit, stands on Lingjiu Peak above Taihuai Town in Wutai County, and is the largest and most complete Tibetan Buddhist, or Yellow, monastery on the mountain. It began in the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei as the Great Manjushri Court. In 1656, the thirteenth year of the Shunzhi reign, it was converted into a lama temple, and Qing emperors and princes stayed here when they came to worship. A stairway of 108 stone steps climbs from the temples below to the summit. Since 1983 it has been a national key Buddhist temple in the Han Chinese area, and since 2006 part of the Wutai ancient building group.
