Mian Mountain: Cliffs, Cables and the Path Up
A Taoist mountain in Jiexiu reached by cliff paths, tied to the story of Jie Zhitui, and repaired on private money since 1995 before its scenic area opened in 2000.
Mount Mian rises in the town of Mianshan, in Jiexiu, Jinzhong, in central Shanxi. It is a branch of the Taihang Mountains lying south of the Fen River, and its ridge runs for more than 160 kilometres, the highest peak reaching 2,440 metres. The official scenic area opened in 2000 and covers 75 square kilometres, with about 400 attractions grouped into 14 areas. The mountain has been an important Taoist site since the Spring and Autumn period of the Zhou, and it is usually credited as the place where Jie Zhitui and his mother were burnt alive in a forest fire begun in the seventh century BC. Since 1995 a coal and chemical company has been paying for repairs.
